and environment
in Central Asia

Experts on Central Asia will gather at UNU Centre in Tokyo July 16 when UN University hosts a public forum on Recent Issues in Peace and Environment in the region. They will discuss recent research findings regarding the political, economic and social factors affecting the prospects of peace and stability in the region, as well as relevant environmental issues.

Invited speakers include:

  • Irina Zviagelskaya, Vice President of the International Center for Strategic and Political Studies in Moscow (security issues);

  • John Schoeberlein, Director of the Forum for Central Asian Studies at Harvard University (Islam, political order and social transformation);

  • Agadjan G. Babaev, Director of the National Research and Training Centre (desertification  control in Turkmenistan);

  • Baktiyor Mardonov of the Samarkand Division of Uzbek’s Academy of Sciences (environment, sustainable development, desertification and water resources).

The forum is part of the Akino Memorial Research Project on peace and environment in Central Asia and neighbouring regions, undertaken by the UNU in memory of the late Dr. Yutaka Akino with the support of the Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Dr. Akino was killed in July 1998 while on active service as a Civil Affairs Officer of the United Nations Mission of Observers in Tajikistan (UNMOT).

The forum, which will be held at the Elizabeth Rose Conference Hall of the UNU Centre July 16 from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., is open to the public. Advance registration is required.  For more information contact UNU Public Affairs.
