Hokkaido seminar to focus on
global media and information

Information and Media in the Age of Globalization will be the topic of the 2nd UNU Global Seminar – Hokkaido Session, to be held August 27-30 at Hokkaido University in Sapporo, Hokkaido, Japan.

Keynote lecturers at the seminar will be Hatsuhisa Takashima, Director of the United Nations Information Centre in Tokyo, and Prof. Yoshiharu Tsuboi of Waseda University. There will be six additional lectures and a panel discussion under the themes of Information, Media and the Human Society, Globalization and Pluralization, Media and International Politics, and The Role of Media in the Age of Globalization, as well as group discussions and a guidance session for those interested in seeking employment in international organizations.

The Hokkaido Session is organized by UNU with support from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan; the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology of Japan; the Hokkaido Government; and the City of Sapporo. Hokkaido University, Hokkaido University of Education, Otaru University of Commerce, Hokkai Gakuen University and Hokusei Gakuen University.

UNU is also accepting applications for the Eighth UNU Global Seminar – Kobe-Awaji Session, to be held from October 7-10 at the Hotel Pearl City Kobe in Kobe and the Westin Awaji Island in Awaji, Japan.  The theme of this year’s seminar will be Building Peace: Towards Inclusive Society.

The session will open with keynote lectures by Prof. Nay Htun, University for Peace, and Prof. Toshiki Mogami, International Christian University.  Other scheduled lecturers include Prof. Modjtaba Sadria (Chuo University), Prof. Kyoko Kikuchi (Tsuda College), Mr. Akio Nomura (Asahi Shimbun Research Center), Dr. Martha Caldwell Harris (Atlantic Council of the United States), Prof. Kenichi Ohno (National Graduate Institute for Policy Studies), and Mr. Masaharu Kohno (Consul-General of Japan in Los Angeles). 

Individual sessions will focus on Education, Culture, Value, and Mass Media and Economics, Society, Environment and Natural Resources. The objective of the seminar is to discuss ways to build up a dynamic multicultural society that can prevent the resurgence of armed conflicts.

The UNU Global Seminar Kobe-Awaji Session is jointly organized by UNU, Hyogo International Association and Kobe International Center for Cooperation and Communication. Kobe University, Osaka University, and Kyoto University are collaborating to plan and organize the seminar.

The UNU Global Seminar series is an annual programme designed to enhance awareness about global issues among university students and young professionals in Japan by giving them an opportunity to interact with international scholars and experts. There are seven UNU Global Seminar sessions held annually throughout Japan.
