United Nations University has launched a UNU Capacity-Development Fund with the goal of doubling the number of fellowships it awards to young researchers and practitioners from developing countries within four years.

The capacity-development programme aims to enhance the capacity for learning, development and governance especially in developing countries and helps to alleviate the intellectual isolation which might otherwise become a reason for researchers to move to industrialized countries.

Fellowships are available at postgraduate level only and are offered in the four priority programme areas: Peace, Security and Governance; Environment; Development and Science; and Technology and Society. Four types of fellowships are awarded: travel grants, short term training courses and workshops, long-term training courses and Masters and Ph.D level fellowships.

UNU is now seeking contributions from governments, public and private sector organizations and individuals to increase the size and outreach of its programmes to increase human capacities in developing countries. To achieve its goal of doubling the number of fellowships it awards, it will need an additional US$1 million by 2004.
