INCORE
offering three
courses at
2001 summer
school

The Initiative on Conflict Resolution and Ethnicity (INCORE), a joint initiative of United Nations University and the University of Ulster, is offering three simultaneous courses at the INCORE Summer School 2001.

The courses will be international in scope and cover both theoretical and practical aspects of the following topics:

  • Psychological Approaches to Conflict Resolution – Why They Do What They Do, with Professor Tony Gallager, of Belfast's Queen's University, will explore some of the psychological issues involved in ethnopolitical conflict including issues of identity and group identification, contact theory, the learning of prejudice, the psychology of blaming, human needs theory, and the psychology of violence.
  • Post Conflict Situations – Dealing with the Past will focus on countries in transition and the different strategies that they use to deal with the past following extensive political conflict. Trainer/facilitator will be Brandon Hamber, a clinical psychologist who coordinates the Transition and Reconciliation Unit at South Africa's Centre for the Study of Violence and Reconciliation.
  • The Challenges and Contradictions of Development and Conflict, with Stephen Jackson, Director, International Famine Centre, National University of Ireland, Cork, aims to provide a better understanding of the complex relationships between international development and relief assistance and the conflicts into which they are injected.

Designed for experienced individuals, the courses will allow for reflection, discussion and debate. Topical issues in post-settlement Northern Ireland will also be addressed through presentations and discussions with local experts. More details and an online registration form can be found on the INCORE web site.
