UNU/IAS launches sustainable
development roundtable

UNU/IAS has launched a roundtable discussion series which will serve as a focal point for international discussion and debate on the challenge of sustainable development. The first took place on March 18 when the subject was Biosecurity: Access to Genetic Resources and Benefit Sharing – The Bonn Guidelines on Access and Benefit Sharing (ABS): The Way Forward.

The aim of the discussion was to identify actions that are expected to be undertaken by various actors (private sector, public sector, intermediaries, and local communities) in an effort to achieve the objectives of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD). Under the Convention, these procedures must promote the fair and equitable sharing of benefits arising from the use of genetic resources.

The roundtable included a business perspective presentation of best practice in relation to access and benefit sharing (ABS) in Japan. In addition, experts from Europe discussed how the Bonn Guidelines fit with the tools available to implement the CBD and ABS regimes and discussed other measures required to ensure the equitable distribution of benefits from genetic resources and biotechnology.
