New book
probes impact
of initial conditions
on 'late
reformers'

The impact of initial conditions on the transition process in gradual and late reforming countries is examined in a new book from UNU/WIDER published by Oxford University Press. Transition and Institutions: The Experience of Gradual and Late Reformers, edited by Giovanni Andrea Cornia and Vladimir Popov, focuses on structural institutions in Russia and the East.

In transitional countries with unfavourable initial conditions and weak institutions, economic and social performance cannot be explained fully by macroeconomic adjustment, privatization, and liberalization approaches that have been adopted. By reviewing the impact of initial conditions on industrial and institutional conditions in the gradual and late reforming countries, this book aims to rekindle the debate surrounding these largely neglected issues.
