President Thabo Mbeki of the Republic of South Africa gave the 2nd "U Thant Distinguished Lecture" on Tuesday, 2 October 2001. The lecture, which focused on the "New African Initiative," was held in cooperation with the South African Embassy and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan in the United Nations University's U Thant International Conference Hall.
